New Orleans Will NEVER Give Up!
I spent a few days in New Orleans visiting my brother & his family. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, he and his wife lived in the Upper 9th Ward, escaping devastation to their home by about 1 inch. There were many repairs to make, but with time and help, Jason got the home repaired & put it up for rent. He now lives in the Westbank area, out of the flood plain. Although this trip was for the sole reason of seeing my 4-month-old nephew, I really was amazed at how much NOLA is still affected by the devastation in 2005. The taller bridges I saw going up a year ago are still being worked on, but there are so many new living complexes like apartments and condos. The Lower 9th Ward may never be back, but people are building elsewhere. I really am so thankful for all of those people who never gave up on New Orleans after the hurricane.

Jason (my brother) and I walked down to a small café near his neighborhood on Saturday morning. We passed a 150-year-old library that's being remodeled, several beautifully restored homes, and churches that are well over 100 years old. I remembered the comment that made me the most upset after Hurricane Katrina, which was, "They need to just bury that whole city & either leave it or start over." Are you kidding me??? Surely this was said by someone who had never been to New Orleans. The history is so rich; the culture is unlike anywhere else in the world; the people are so accepting and open-minded. Also, what about the fact that NOLA is the "Birthplace of Jazz?" If it weren't for jazz music, my brother would not have had the type of musical exposure that motivated him to become the successful musician that he is now. New Orleans has a spirit about it; a spirit that we cannot suppress; a spirit that we cannot kill; a spirit that could never be buried.

New Orleans is cleaning up. It's mending its wounds and getting back up. This place will keep going and keep inspiring. New Orleans will NEVER give up!
